Interactive Voice Response (IVR) is an automated telephony system that interacts with callers, gathers information and routes calls to the appropriate recipient. An IVR system (IVRS) accepts a combination of voice telephone input and touch-tone keypad selection and provides appropriate responses in the form of voice, fax, callback, e-mail and perhaps other media.
Common IVR applications include:
- Bank and stock account balances and transfers
- Surveys and polls
- Office call routing
- Call center forwarding
- Simple order entry transactions
- Selective information lookup (movie schedules, etc.)
Using computer telephony integration (CTI), IVR applications can hand off a call to a human being who can view data related to the caller at a display.
SMS Short Code
These are special telephone numbers designed to be easier to read and remember than normal telephone numbers.
There are two kinds of short codes, shared and dedicated. Dedicated short codes are dedicated to one customer while shared short codes can be shared among organizations where they use certain keywords to identify their traffic.
Short codes can be used to communicate, market your products with your consumers, television program voting, ordering ringtones, charity donations or mobile services. You can also use the SMS Short Codes to send notifications, customer alerts, mobile marketing, customer service or any other application.
Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) is an interactive star menu engagement through an easy to remember code. USSD can also be defined as a protocol used by GSM cellular telephones to communicate with a service provider’s computers i.e. Network operators, banks, Saccos and the like.
USSD is commonly used to query information and trigger services like WAP browsing, prepaid callback service, mobile-money services, location-based content services, menu-based information services, and as part of configuring the phone on the network.
Unlike SMS, USSD create a real-time connection during a USSD session where the connection remains open, allowing a two-way exchange of a sequence of data. Even though USSD is more responsive than services that use SMS, USSD messages can neither be stored, nor forwarded.
Most GSM phones have USSD capability.
